EXPO FEATURES HOMETOWN FLOWERS

It isn’t often that hometown horticulturists get to plunk their collective green thumb down in an international spotlight, and the chance isn’t being missed here.

Expo ‘74 visitors are being treated at every turn to boxes in the hexagonal shape of the Expo emblem filled with flowers raised by Spokane florists, nurserymen, and just plain folks who like to coax geraniums, rhododendrons, snapdragons, pansies, and petunias along in their own backyards.

Not that the Lilac City’s flowers are without renown far beyond Washington State’s borders. Spokane’s float, “Happiness is a World’s Fair,” won the Queen’s Trophy at this year’s Rose Parade.

But the city’s numerous garden clubs, civic organizations, florists, nurserymen, and private citizens decided a World’s Fair is an excellent time to show their prize blossoms on home turf.

There are flowers galore here throughout the fair, greeting visitors at entrances and blending into nearly every exhibit. After the fair is over, the Parks Department will place the hexagonal boxes throughout the city as a permanent reminder of Expo ‘74.

From the Official Souvenir Program, p. 82:

TREES, TREES, TREES

Everywhere you look on Expo ‘74 you’ll see trees… lots of ‘em. Douglas firs, Scotch Pines, Ponderosa Pines, London planetrees, red maples, eastern hemlocks and Washington hawthornes. In all, about 2,500 trees in 23 different varieites.
