Unused Design Concepts on Souvenirs: In-River Fountain

Various iterations of early concept art showed fountains emerging from the river itself.

One design plan for Expo ‘74 involved a tall, cascading fountain emerging from the right side of the Opera House steps, approximately in line with the Lantern sculpture. Although never built, this unused Expo concept is subtle enough that it survives in many depictions of the Washington State Pavilion/Opera House.
